GRAY ZONE BRIEF 1 DECEMBER 2025
U.S. TARGETING Daesh/ISIS & AQ IN SOMALIA

US dramatically escalates Somalia airstrikes as Trump admin targets ISIS, al Qaeda terrorists** - The number of U.S. airstrikes against jihadi terrorists in Somalia has increased more than tenfold under the Trump administration so far this year, compared to missions carried out under President Biden in 2024. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed to Fox News Digital on Friday that it conducted 10 airstrikes in 2024, and that so far this year it has carried out more than 100 airstrikes in Somalia. In the latest military action Tuesday, AFRICOM personnel were involved in an airstrike and reportedly a gun battle lasting up to four hours with ISIS-Somalia jihadists in Puntland, in the north of this African country. The operation was planned, AFRICOM said in a media statement, "in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia."

U.S. TARGETING DAESH/ISIS IN SYRIA

**CENTCOM announces joint Syrian Forces operation against ISIS weapon storage facilities in Southern Syria** - The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a joint operation with the Syrian Ministry of Interior, destroying over 15 ISIS weapons caches in Southern Syria. On Sunday, CENTCOM announced a joint operation with Syrian forces, which centered around “identifying and eliminating the ISIS weapons storage facilities across the Rif Damashq province during multiple airstrikes and ground detonations.” The operation was conducted from November 24th through November 27. ISW Key Takeaways

Hezbollah Disarmament: Israel reportedly gave the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) a deadline of December 7 to make progress in its disarmament of Hezbollah amid ongoing Israeli preparations for a potential operation in Lebanon. The LAF has continued to reject Israeli and US statements about its lack of progress in disarming Hezbollah, claiming that the LAF has made significant progress.

Drone Attack in Iraqi Kurdistan: Iranian-backed Iraqi militias may have conducted a drone strike targeting the Emirati-operated Khor Mor Gas Field in Chamchamal District, Sulaymaniyah Province, Iraq, on November 26 to try to deter Iraqi Kurdish political parties from working against Iranian-backed Iraqi parties in the government formation process. The drone attack caused material damage and sparked a fire but did not cause any casualties.

GZB INFOCUS: Global Migration in 2024: A Snapshot

The world’s migrant population has reached 304 million, reflecting a steady rise in cross-border movement driven by economics, demographics and geopolitical instability. The United States remains the world’s pre-eminent destination, hosting 52.4 million migrants, more than the next four countries combined. Germany, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom also rank among the top recipients, underscoring their economic pull and labour demands.

Patterns of origin tell a different story. India and China continue to supply the largest numbers of people living abroad, the by-product of vast populations and globalized labour networks. Meanwhile, countries scarred by conflict or economic turmoil: Ukraine, Syria, Venezuela, feature prominently, illustrating how crises can reshape migration flows in short order.

The Gulf states stand out for their extraordinary migrant-to-population ratios: in Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait, foreign-born residents constitute the backbone of the workforce. At the other end of the spectrum, much of Africa and South America remain regions of relatively modest immigration, though internal and regional mobility is rising.

Taken together, the data depict a world in which migration is no longer an exception but a structural feature of the global economy. Demand for labour, ageing populations in wealthy nations and persistent instability ensure that borders, however politicized, remain porous to people as well as to goods and capital.

The United States has accepted — on average over the past 2 decades — about 1 million legal immigrants.

That being said, adversaries of the United States have thoroughly taken advantage of laxed policies by the Biden/Auto Pen Administration and between 2016 and 2020 an additional 7-9 million illegal immigrants crossed the U.S. border from Mexico and Canada.

CHINA, IRAN & AFGHANISTAN

To compound the problem, refugees from Afghanistan were not properly vetted and thousands of Jihadist fighters were “salted” into the flow of refugees and are now in the U.S.

Many Chinese immigrants came to the U.S. because of “financial
flight.” The CCP government salted that immigrant flow with single MAMs (military age males) who many of which are likely PLA operatives.

Many Iranians crossed the border from Canada and several plots and terrorist strikes have already played out. Iran has had clandestine operatives and networks in the US, for decades, primarily focused on intimidating and targeting dissidents, and conducting cyber operations. Examples include plots to kidnap activists, surveillance operations, and cyberattacks against infrastructure. These activities are carried out by intelligence agencies like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS).

India likely has the most illegal immigrants, with an estimated 20 million or more Bangladeshi undocumented immigrants. By contrast, the United States has the largest number of undocumented immigrants in a single country in North America, with around 14 million (plus/minus) as of 2023.
