Title: February 6, 2026
GRAY ZONE BRIEF 6 FEBRUARY 2026
THE RELEVANCE OF OSINT
**From Secrets to Sensors: Why Open
Source Data Must Drive Modern Intelligence **-
As the Pentagon accelerates AI-driven
command-and-control modernization, the U.S. intelligence community could risk
irrelevance unless it rapidly rebuilds itself around open-source and
commercially available data. Renee Pruneau Novakoff, former Deputy Director of
Intelligence for Sensitive Activities and Special Programs in Office of the
Secretary of Defense, argues that to support real-time battlefield
decision-making, intelligence must start with public data, use commercial
analytics at scale, and fuse it with classified sources. Achieving this
requires a major cultural shift, shared infrastructure, and leadership to
overcome bureaucratic resistance and deliver a unified, real-time intelligence
picture for warfighters.
VENEZUELA
**Maduro allies reportedly arrested in
Venezuela, officials say **-
Venezuelan security services have
questioned two politically connected businessmen, Raúl Gorrín and Alex Saab,
both of whom face money laundering charges in the United States, according to
officials familiar with the matter. Local reports indicate they were taken into
custody in Caracas, though the current status of both men remains unclear and
Saab’s legal team denied the detentions. An American official said Saab, who
was held in the U.S. for over three years on bribery charges, is set to be
extradited to the U.S. soon. Their apparent questioning is seen as signaling
closer cooperation between Washington and Venezuela’s new caretaker leadership
under Delcy Rodríguez. The move marks the first targeting of high-profile
allies of leader Nicolás Maduro and has heightened uncertainty among the former
regime’s loyalists.
ARGENTINA
** Argentina Seeks Extradition of
Maduro from U.S. on Crimes Against Humanity Charges **-
An Argentine federal judge has
formally requested the extradition of former Venezuelan President Nicolás
Maduro from the United States to face charges of crimes against humanity,
Associated Press reported. The Buenos Aires inquest accuses Maduro of overseeing
torture, disappearances, and repression of opponents, invoking Argentina’s
universal jurisdiction law. Maduro, captured by U.S. forces in January, is
already jailed in New York on narcotics and conspiracy charges. While the Trump
administration is unlikely to grant extradition, human rights advocates hailed
the request as a landmark moment for Venezuelan victims seeking justice.
COLOMBIA
**Colombia: Alias Pitufo was
captured on the border with Ecuador: he had an Interpol red notice and is
wanted by the U.S.**-
On the afternoon of February 3,
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez reported on his X account that one of the main
leaders of the Border Commandos, led by "Araña", had been captured.
Minister Sánchez described the arrest of “Pitufo” or “Marquetalia” as a “blow
to narcoterrorism” in the region , which took place in Puerto Asís, in
Putumayo.
**Colombia: A dump truck loaded with
explosives was detonated on the Caloto-Villa Rica road: dissident groups are
believed to be behind the terrorist attack** - On the afternoon of Tuesday,
February 3, a dump truck loaded with explosive devices detonated on the road
connecting the municipalities of Villa Rica and Caloto, in the north of the
department of Cauca. According to information released by the Third Brigade of
the National Army, the attack took place in the La Arboleda sector, near the
Gualí intersection, an area where a military base is located. The Dagoberto
Ramos Ortiz structure of the FARC dissidents operates in the region and has
been identified as responsible for the attack.
RUSSIAN DEFENSE INDUSTRY
**Russian Defense Firms Absent from
Asia’s Premier Airshow -**
Russian arms manufacturers were
notably absent from the 2026 Singapore Airshow for the second consecutive year,
signaling Moscow’s diminished global defense footprint amid war-related
sanctions and production strain. Analysts said the absence reflects Russia’s
increasingly regionalized and constrained arms-export model, now focused on the
Middle East and Africa. Once dominant in Asian markets, Russia’s sales to China
and India have sharply declined. While Russian officials visited Myanmar this
week to sign defense accords, major weapons exhibitions in Asia now proceed
without a Russian presence. Moscow plans new showcases instead at Gulf defense
expos.
THE SAHEL
**Sahel-based jihadists are extending
their reach. Can a fractured region push back? **- Millions of lives have been
upended in the last two decades across the Sahel region – which stretches
across a band of countries from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea – due to the
actions of terror groups and other violent non-state actors that have
proliferated in countries with often weak central governments. The violence has
been fuelled by a multitude of factors, including the instability and
availability of ammunition and mercenaries that stemmed from the 2011 Nato
intervention in Libya. In recent years, concern has been mounting within and
outside government circles about armed groups extending their reach towards
coastal west Africa. Earlier this month the United Nations said about 4 million
people were now displaced across the Sahel region, with violence and insecurity
driving increasing numbers from their homes. The current counterinsurgency
approach is splintered: Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali – which has publicly
engaged Russia’s Wagner mercenaries – have coalesced into the Association of
Sahel States (AES), issuing passports and collaborating on military strategy.
The trio were previously part of the G5 Sahel, which was dissolved in 2023
after the AES members’ exit, and the Economic Community of West African States
(Ecowas), which “activated” a 5,000-troop standby force in March. “The more
these jihadist threats shift southward, the more security measures will need to
consider a more effective and truly regional approach to dealing with the
issue,” said Afolabi Adekaiyaoja, an Abuja-based analyst and predoctoral
researcher at the International Centre for Tax and Development.
GZB INFOCUS: EPSTEIN
LIKELY DID COMMIT SUICIDE — BUT WAS HE ORDERED TO?
**How Jeffrey Epstein's intelligence
ties go back decades** -
Jeffrey Epstein discussed the UAE
invading Qatar, obtained intelligence on a €500bn bailout to save the Euro
before it happened, and appeared to have information that Russia tipped Turkish
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan off about a failed coup d’etat in 2016. These
snippets into the conversations of the disgraced paedophile, who mysteriously
died in his New York City jail cell in 2019, raise new questions about his ties
to intelligence agencies. Millions of newly released files do not show Epstein
clocking into a Mossad, MI6, or CIA office building. But he did not need to.
Current and former ambassadors, world leaders, and moguls came to him, and his
Caribbean island, where he trafficked young women for sexual abuse. The reality
is that Epstein floated in a world that was unreachable and more elite than
that of intelligence case officers and desk analysts. If current observers
trying to make sense of Epstein’s links to intelligence agencies need an
example, the closest might be The Night Manager, a mini-series based on the
novel by John Le Carre. The main antagonist of the show is Richard Onslow Roper
- a cut-glass, arms-dealing businessman who is an asset for members of British
Intelligence and global corporations, even as he is hounded by other factions
of MI6. (Middle East Eye) **NOTE:** - posted for a detailed look at Epstein's
connections to intelligence organizations (primarily Mossad) and suspicions
that he was an agent conducting blackmail operations. Link to article:

**NOTE: From the beginning of
Epstein’s arrest to his murder and throughout the Ghislaine Maxwell trials, GZB
has maintained that Epstein was likely an asset or informant for either the
CIA, as/or multiple foreign intelligence agencies. Roy Black, Eric Shern and
Alan Dershowitz all represented Epstein — at least 2 of them helped secure the
2008 plea deal Epstein received.
It could be very true that Epstein
took his own life. Occam’s Razor — the simplest answer is usually the answer.
It could also be true that Epstein was
ordered to take his own life and whoever handed down that order made sure
cameras were off, guards were not looking and that the opportunity was prime.
Approximately 300 to 700+ inmates die
by suicide annually in U.S. correctional facilities, with 340 suicides in
state/federal prisons and 355 in local jails recorded in 2019. Suicide is a
leading cause of death in local jails, accounting for 24-35% of deaths, while
comprising 5-8% of deaths in state/federal prisons.
Key statistics on U.S. prisoner
suicides include:
• Total Numbers: From 2000 to 2019,
over 6,200 suicides occurred in local jails. In 2018, there were 311 suicides
in state prisons.
• Rising Rates: Suicides in state
prisons increased 85% between 2001 and 2018. From 2000 to 2019, suicides
increased 85% in state prisons and 61% in federal prisons.
• Jail Specifics: More than half of
all suicides in local jails occur within the first 30 days of incarceration.
• Demographics: The majority of
individuals who die by suicide in custody are white males, and the most common
method is hanging/strangulation.
• Risk Factors: Suicide rates in local
jails are notably higher than in federal or state prisons, partly due to the
high turnover and acute crisis, with rates reaching 50 per 100,000 inmates in
2014.
If Epstein was simply an elite pimp —
this wouldn’t fly. His financial investment abilities are what drew a lot of
prominent people into his circle. So it could be that not everyone involved
with Epstein was a pedophile — some were involved with him for the dollah
dollah bills, y’all.
That, is likely what made him unique
and why he lasted so long. If he was just a sex trafficker he likely would have
been ghosted a long time ago — simply because he had too much dirt on too many
people.
Pray.
Train.
Stay informed.
Be vigilant.
